Our History
The Osterville Veterans’ Association (OVA) is steeped in history, rooted in a community that has long valued both service and fellowship. Located at the corner of Main and West Bay Roads, in a building that has evolved with the village, the OVA has grown from humble beginnings into a cornerstone of Osterville life.
Our story begins in the basement of one of Osterville’s most historic buildings, now affectionately known as The Foxhole. Dug out by Seabees (Navy Construction Battalion) during World War II, this space was created as a gathering spot for soldiers stationed in Crosbytown, now the site of Crosby Yacht Yard. After the war, in 1947, a group of local veterans formally incorporated the Osterville Veterans’ Association, transforming the historic building—once known as Horticultural Hall—into their headquarters. This building, originally constructed in 1897 as Union Hall, had a long history as a community gathering place before becoming the OVA's home.
The building’s history dates back even further, to a time before 1803, when it served as a schoolhouse for “Lovell’s Neighborhood” and later as a multi-denominational religious center. After years of use, the original building was replaced in 1897 by the current structure, which became Union Hall. For nearly 50 years, it hosted minstrels, concerts, and plays. However, as commercial entertainment grew, the hall’s significance shifted, and it was taken over by the Horticultural Society before being passed to the OVA.
Today, the Osterville Veterans’ Association honors the legacy of those who served while actively supporting veterans and the local community. With 110 members strong, the OVA remains committed to its mission of camaraderie and service. From awarding scholarships to deserving students to sponsoring community events and supporting veteran-related causes, the OVA continues to play a vital role in Osterville.
Beyond its social atmosphere, the OVA is deeply involved in various charitable activities, such as re-shingling veterans' homes, sponsoring youth sports, and organizing an annual fishing trip for veterans. As we look to the future, the OVA remains dedicated to preserving this legacy, ensuring that The Foxhole and the Osterville Veterans’ Association continue to serve as a place of refuge and connection for generations to come.
